In this episode of The 411 Live, host Beverly Taylor, continues into Part 2 with our guest, Dr. Debbie Lassiter, CEO of Convergence Resource Center, and Lisa McCormick, a Parent Advocate.  We continue to discuss the impact that sex trafficking has on the family. Lisa continues her story, giving a detailed account of how her son’s experience impacted her and the family. The misunderstandings they had with the situation and the trauma they experienced with it. Lisa goes on to say,  “Yeah. And I kind of compared it a lot too, I’m having a newborn baby at home again. We did not trust him anymore, um, after all the runaways and all the drug use and everything. And so I had to have somebody watch him 24 hours a day. So someone had the day shift, someone had the night shift. We never, you know, left him completely alone”.

Dr. Debbie Lassiter goes on to explain the family’s side of sex trafficking and what it does over time. The change in the types of relationships the victim has with their families, what seems to be a sudden change in personalities, and the right and wrong ways families can respond to such a tragic situation. Dr. Debbie Lassiter says, “The family will absolutely have vicarious trauma. They will absolutely because they love the person. They absolutely will feel some of what they felt and then they won’t know what to do with that feeling”. Dr. Debbie Lassiter also goes on to explain how a family member can approach the situation and the understanding family members will need to have to help support trafficked victims.  Sex trafficking doesn’t just affect the victim but also the ones close to them, it’s a ripple effect. Join Beverly and guest as we embark on change, for a better future.
